13th Annual Joe Kane Scholarship Golf Outing Benefit

Skal Pittsburgh, friends and industry professionals headed to Weirton, West Virginia early Monday morning, July 17, to participate in the 13th Annual Joe Kane Scholarship Golf Outing Benefit at Williams Golf & Country Club. Williams was established in 1932 and features an 18-hole, par 72 golf course and a clubhouse renowned for its banquet and dining facilities. This West Virginia Top Ten course challenges golfers while maintaining a beautiful layout.

History

Started With A View

A group of like-minded golfers thought it would be a good idea to build a golf course on the hilltop overlooking the Ohio River about three centuries ago. So, they approached J.C. Williams, the president of Weirton Steel, about their idea since it was the steel mill’s underdeveloped land. Weirton Steel owned and managed the Williams Country Club until the early 1980’s. In early March of 1982 Weirton Steel had received news that its parent company, As the steel industry changed so did Williams Country Club, and in 2015 new owner, James Markovitz bought the club and renamed it Williams Golf & Country Club. Mr. Markovitz is breathing new life into the club while it undergoes numerous renovations. Click Here for full history information.

Welcome

Golfers were welcomed by volunteers Stephanie Work, Renee Pintado, Marisa Haney, Nicole Adamski and Kathy Kolar. Volunteers registered and issued welcome bags to golfers, which were made possible by Crowne Plaza, Good Advertising, Best Western The Inn at Franciscan Square, Pittsburgh Transportation Group and Sheraton Pittsburgh Airport. The pleasant Williams staff presented the early risers a delicious buffet breakfast sponsored by Pitt Ohio, which included scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage links, yogurt, fresh fruit and pastries.

The Shotgun Start began with fog at 9:30 am, but as the day went on 22 teams were able to enjoy the beautiful hot summer afternoon competing in a shamble format. Thank you to the 21 Tourism and Affiliate businesses that sponsored holes, games and refreshments. New this year was a chance, brought to us by Shults Lincoln, for golfers to win a 2017 Lincoln MKC for the first hole-in-one at the 12th Hole! Reception

A cocktail reception followed the full day of golf. The reception sponsored by Breadworks – Pittsburgh Born & Bread featured a buffet of hot and cold hors d’ouerves. Event co-chair, Tom King, Past-President, Joe Kane and Vice President Derek Pintado addressed the fellow skalleagues before toasting to happiness, good health, friendship and long life! The Skal toast was made possible by Blush Sports Bar, Hotel Monaco and Wyndham Grand Hotel. Cooked to temperature steaks were ready on the grill.

Silent Auction items included airline tickets, complimentary hotel night stays, golf packages, sports memorabilia/tickets, and a digital billboard valued at $10,000 all in effort to raise funds to award scholarship to deserving students in our region. This year, the club awarded four $1,500 scholarships to outstanding local students in the tourism and hospitality field. Since the tournament’s inception, the club has awarded over $100,000 in scholarship funds to deserving young students. We are excited to welcome these students as “Young SKAL” members and look forward to watching these fine men and women carry the torch for future generations as they serve in tourism and hospitality.
